The VA Teacher Ambassador Program is a community outreach program that forms partnerships with local school systems to promote teaching about veterans and patriotism by providing resources to these schools, while educating teachers about the VA system.

The workshop entitled “Heroes and Heroines: The Faces of Freedom” were held at the VA Medical Center’s in Alabama, Georgia, and South Carolina. The theme of this workshop highlights the accomplishments of American Service men and women, their important roles and contributions to our nation’s history, and the role the VA plays in their lives. The hospitals have partnered with local stakeholders, such as the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW), and EX-Prisoners of War (EX-POW), and presented what being a veteran truly means from the standpoint of two WWII veterans. Each teacher receives a binder with lesson ideas and resources pertaining to veterans, a CD-ROM containing website resources, and DVDs focusing on the veteran experience. The teachers are also given a hands-on aging sensitivity exercise, simulating the aging process as well as time to share best practices on classroom activities that highlight veterans and other programs designed to be community building exercises between local schools and veterans.
