VA VISN 7 Announces New Birmingham VA Health Care System Director

September 27, 2021

Birmingham, Ala. — The Department of Veterans Affairs is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Oladipo A. Kukoyi as the new Executive Director for the Birmingham VA Health Care System, in Birmingham, AL, effective Sept. 26, 2021. He will be responsible for a health care system serving 68,000 Veterans in 24 counties at a 141-bed tertiary care teaching medical center and nine Community Based Outpatient Clinics.

“We are excited to bring Dr. Kukoyi on board as the new Director of the Birmingham, Alabama, VA Health Care System,” said Dr. David M. Walker, Veterans Integrated Service Network (VISN) 7 Director. “His sound leadership qualities and proven experience will be valuable assets for the facility, the employees and volunteers, and most importantly, for the Veterans we are honored to serve.”

Dr. Kukoyi has been serving as the Interim Executive Director Medical Center in Birmingham since May, and prior to that was the Chief of Staff for the medical center.

During his time with VISN 7 he has served at the Augusta and Columbia VA medical centers, and prior to his time with VISN 7 he was the Medical Director of Inpatient Psychiatry at the Sacramento VA Medical Center in California from September 2007 to January 2013.

Dr. Kukoyi is board certified in Psychiatry and Family Medicine. He has held academic appointments at a variety of higher institutions of learning and is currently a Clinical Professor in the departments of Psychiatry and Family Medicine at the Medical College of Georgia.
